Cuddle Puppy

Done for a challenge. who could resist this reference, even if it is only a 'quickie' drawing! charcoal pencil on 9 X 12 sketch paper.

Safe Harbor V2

This is one I painted before as a small study, and decided to go big with it! Same composition, although i did tweak some things i didn't like in the original. It took way too long... i'm not sure i want to do many more 'repaints'. I found it painful to paint the same thing twice. I don't think i would survive on an assembly line! :P acrylic on 16 X 20 canvas

Portrait in Conte

I hadn't done a portrait with conte on black in ages and i love doing them! Along comes a beautiful reference by ClaimYourself (many thanks! :D ), so out comes the drawing box! an enjoyable 2 or 3 hours spent. i should do this more often ;)

Eternal Spring

i came across a reference photo for this a while ago, and remembered thinking that this image could be so much more. finally decided to take a shot with the brushes and rearranged a lot of things to improve the composition. it just struck a chord with me... i guess i'm just getting old and thinking about retirement, although it is ten years too early .. sigh lol

Safe Harbor

A small 8 X 10 acrylic i did as a study. all those boat fiddly bits are annoying to paint, but i kinda like the way it came out. maybe a bigger version in the future?

Hibiscus Garden

woot! finally painted something!. i never seem to get past a quick sketch lately. anyway, still trying to incorporate line work into paintings. not sure about all the reds and greens, but that's the way i see them (or at least the way they are labelled on the paint tube :p )

LIfe Drawing June and July 2013

The drawing sessions were kind of messed up in June and July because of the floods in Calgary, but here's the best of the last life drawing sessions for me until September. Tried more color and actually tried to paint from life for the first time. oooh that's intimidating but i survived!

Tijuana Taxi

Messing around with a couple of different styles and i came up with this goofy thing

Tutti Frutti

I got back to working a little looser with emphasis on the line, which i started a while ago and strayed away from for some reason. I finished this last night in the last art class until September :o(

LIfe Drawing - May 2013

Here are the better drawings from my life drawing sessions in May. Tried a few new things... must more line oriented lately..... and that funky graphite powder thing... my instructor talked me into that one lol! Fixative is sprayed on the paper then it is dusted with graphite powder while it is still tacky. If you are wondering about the size of the drawings, i work on 18 X 24 in paper on an easel.

Chinese Lanterns

I painted this before.. an 8 X 10 'quickie' one weekend, and i liked the colors so much I thought it deserved a better treatment. So here is the new version... bolder colors... acrylic on 16 X 20 canvas this time. I tried to get away from the realistic stuff and used a lot more line here.

Life Drawing - April 2013

Here is the best of April life drawing sessions. a few experiments with color, but i am way too tentative! my color vision is not good and it is hard to make color decisions quickly for me. Gotta try these things though ;o)

Athabasca Runoff

This is the Athabasca River, half way between Jasper and Banff, Alberta Canada, in the late spring. The highway between the 2 towns is called the Icefield Parkway, and for good reason. The view of the glaciers in the mountains is spectacular!

Life Drawing - March 2013

here's my favorite drawings from all 4 life drawing sessions i went to in March. i seem to like the results of the shorter poses more than the long ones. I suppose that makes sense considering i enjoy doing a more gestural approach to drawing figures.i do measure when i have to, but i would rather scribble ha haa

Cliffhangers

another photo reference (taken by myself) i have had stashed away on the to do list for a while and finally got brave enough to tackle it. this is a scene from Oneonta Gorge, west of Cascade Locks, Oregon, US. Oregon is a beautiful state and i would go back there in a heartbeat!

Emerald Creek

Ok, that's not the name of the creek, but I couldn't think of a better title. I have no idea what the name of the creek is! This is painted from a photo I took in a small city park in Calgary, Alberta Canada. In fact, just below the blue sky opening in the top left corner, there is a major freeway! great place to hide from the city eh?

LIfe Drawing Feb 18 & 25, 2013

I combined the last couple of weeks this time... because I'm too lazy to post every week! I don't want to get too repetitive anyway.

The setup was changed last week so there were black drapes hung behind the model. i took the opportunity to experiment with black paper, and unfortunately it was not great for pastel and conte crayon... not nearly enough 'tooth' to hold the medium... ah well. better paper next time... live and learn

all were done on 18 X 24 paper, except the black ones, which was 1/2 sheet of the same.

Prairie Sentinels

These 2 defiant trees are clinging to the cliffs near Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump near Lethbridge Alberta, Canada. Native hunters many many years ago used to drive herds of buffalo off these cliffs to supply meat for their tribe for the winter. How times have changed... there is a great interpretive center at the site now, but the buffalo are long gone.

Old Man in Cowboy Hat

'old man, look at my life... i'm a lot like you were... ' Neil Young (from the song 'Old Man')
I kept thinking of this song while i was painting this one. I'm currently reading Neil Young's autobiography... i suppose that's why. :)

January Life Drawings

Getting back into life drawing for the new year. Here is the best of January :o)

First class after the holidays. Mostly getting the rust off.. lol!

I felt much more comfortable drawing on this night... just back in the routine of drawing I guess.

This night was the much awaited 2 model night! A couple did the posing for us. The gent had never modeled before but the lady was an experienced and all went very well! Its a handful to draw 2 figures in a short time, but also rewarding!
